The Marangu Route, also known as the Coca-Cola Route, is one of the most popular routes up Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. The route is known for its comfortable huts and the option to sleep in dormitory-style accommodation, making it a popular choice for those seeking a more accessible trekking experience.
The Marangu Route takes approximately 6 to 7 days to complete, depending on the itinerary, and starts and ends at the Marangu Gate. The trail begins by passing through lush rainforest and continues through alpine meadows and eventually reaches the alpine desert below the glaciers of Kilimanjaro’s summit.
On the first day of your 7-day Marangu Route Kilimanjaro trek, you’ll arrive at Marangu Gate, which is the starting point for the Marangu Route. From here, you’ll begin your journey up the mountain, following a well-trodden path through the lush rainforest that covers the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro. The first camp, Mandara Hut, is located at an elevation of 2,700 meters (8,858 feet) and is a comfortable and well-equipped facility with hot showers and other amenities. After reaching the hut, you’ll have time to relax, eat a hot meal, and get a good night’s sleep to prepare for the challenges ahead.
Day 4: Wake up early for the summit push to the top of Kilimanjaro, Uhuru Peak, via the Gilman’s Point.
The summit push is the most challenging part of the trek and takes anywhere from 6-8 hours. You will need to be well-prepared, both physically and mentally, for this final ascent.
Early in the morning, begin the ascent to the summit of Kilimanjaro, starting with a steep hike up to the crater rim at Gillman’s Point. From there, continue along the rim to the summit, Uhuru Peak, reaching it by sunrise. After taking in the breathtaking views and enjoying the achievement, begin the descent back to Kibo Hut for some rest and replenishment. In the afternoon, continue the descent back to Horombo Hut for a well-deserved night’s rest.
